When I learned that Haagen-Dazs Philippines slashed its ice cream products down to a whopping 50%, I just thought that it was to accompany the closing of some of their branches.
What I didn’t realize at the time was that it was actually a clearance sale as General Mills, the brand’s exclusive distributor, decided to shut down Haagen-Dazs’ operations in the Philippines!
Before that particular business decision came to play, General Mills was even planning to put up at least 5 to 10 more shops in Metro Manila.
But the plan never took shape as the brand failed to draw more customers which the company attributes to “an increasingly challenging business environment.”
We don’t have to be an expert to understand that the market is being dominated by rival Selecta and the numbers concur as it continues to enjoy its 70% market share which is further cemented by the success of Magnum.
Haagen-Dazs’ biggest problem here in the Philippines is that it can’t compete with the prices set down by Selecta and other companies, including that of independent stalls found inside the mall. But as far as quality is concerned, no one can deny Haagen-Dazs ice cream’s topnotch taste!
As Haagen-Dazs prepares to take its final bow here in the Philippines, I, for one want to say my simple thanks for all the delightful memories we had with the said ice cream brand.
Thanks for making our bonding time more fun!
A big thanks for making our family time more special!
With a heavy heart, we say:
Sayonara slow-melting ice cream!
Sayonara Haagen-Dazs Fondue!
Don’t forget to grab your favorite Haagen-Dazs products while they’re still within reach.
