Three years before Senator Juan Flavier’s retirement from the Philippine Senate, my good friend Jonnie-ni Anzures and I were able to interview him in Oras na Pilipinas, a public affairs program aired on 702 DZAS on the AM band.
I was struck by his candid personality and willingness to answer questions with grace, humor and sincerity.
Back then, the flight junket issue was a hot and controversial topic.
A number of senators were being grilled about their trip expenditures.
According to the kind senator, many officials urged foreign organizations to invite them over for speaking engagements and in turn, these agencies didn’t have to pay a thing for their board, lodging and what-nots.
Somehow these officials found a way to utilize government funds to pay for all their foreign expenses.
During our interview, we had a glimpse at the man well-loved by people from all walks of life.
As it turned out, a lot of people also regard the former senator with fondness.
One of them is Senator Pia Cayetano, who happened to be his seatmate and good friend at the Senate.
Senator Pia shares her heartwarming story in her blog.
